I Am... Contemporary Women Artists of Africa looks to current events to understand why projects focused on artists who identify as women still remain necessary, as well as offering a review of publications and exhibitions related to Africa's women making art, an overview of the collection history of the Smithsonian National Museum of African art, and models a new way of presenting artists who are women that focuses on them as individuals contributing to the full spectrum of human experience as opposed to homogenizing categories like "craft" or "the body."
