The crested rat, Lophiomys imhausi, is the only mammal known to sequester plant toxins. Found in eastern Africa, this large muroid rodent defends against predation by coating specialized hairs along its sides with cardenolide toxins from the poison arrow tree, Acokanthera schimperi. Here we provide supplemental video and image files of L. imhausi behavior in captivity and natural environments, with an emphasis on social interactions and toxin sequestration behavior.
