Ron Walsworth leads an interdisciplinary research group that develops precision measurement tools and applies them to problems in both the physical and life sciences.  Current areas of research include: new approaches to the search for dark matter; studying the Sun as a star to aid detection of Earth-like planets around other stars; and the development of quantum sensors with applications ranging from condensed matter physics to neuroscience to Earth & planetary science.

Public Biography

  • Ron Walsworth is a Senior Physicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and also a part-time faculty member in Harvard University Physics Department.  He leads an interdisciplinary research group that develops precision measurement tools and applies them to problems in both the physical and life sciences.  Current areas of research include: new approaches to the search for dark matter; studying the Sun as if it were a star in order to aid the astronomical detection of Earth-like planets around other stars; and the development of quantum sensors and novel NMR tools, with diverse applications ranging from condensed matter physics to neuroscience to Earth & planetary science.
